We all have different methods to store leftover food, depending on the form and amount of food. Whether it was a bowl of dal makhni from last night’s dinner or a piece of cake that you were unable to finish, everyone usually put the remaining food in containers and store them inside the refrigerator or freezer. However, several people also use aluminum foil to store their leftovers.

It is also used to pack tiffin meals. While aluminium foil is easy to manage, it is not one of the best options to store food. Since aluminum has many chemicals, it may cause harmful diseases and impact your overall health.

According to one research published in the journal, International Journal of Electrochemical Science, aluminum foil might react with acidic foods. “The metal-aluminium leaches out through the foil in different stimulants, especially, in distilled water as well as acidic and alkaline solution. It was seen to be significantly higher in acidic and aqueous solutions in contrast to alcoholic and saline ones.”

The research further indicates how an increase in cooking temperature could cause more leaching. “The leaching is also hugely reliant on the pH value of the food solution, salt, and spices added to the food solutions.”

Various other studies also convey that storing food in aluminum foil might create an airtight seal, which might lead to the growth of bacteria or mould. This could be specifically problematic for perishable food items like dairy products or meat. If not stored well, they can spoil quickly.

While using aluminum foil might be a convenient way of storing food, it is best to choose other options. It is recommended to store leftover food in cling wrap, glass containers, or plastic containers. It prevents oxygen from getting into the food and keeps them fresh for a longer period.

Here are some foods you need to avoid storing in aluminium foil:
