With the recent arrival of monsoon in India, fresh fear of mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue has emerged across the nation. The world health organization (WHO) has identified Dengue, also as a fast emerging pandemic-prone viral disease in many parts of the world.

When the global medical infrastructure has collapsed due to COVID-19, Dengue would have been the last thing we have wanted to hear. That is why in this article Nutritionist Avni Kaul (India’s leading nutritionist and dietician) shares a diet that can help people to strengthen their immunity against dengue as well as fight the disease if they get infected from Aedes mosquito.

1.       Papaya leaf is rich in papain and chymopapain enzymes, which improves our digestive system and cure many digestive disorders including stomach bloating. A healthy digestive system is the first step towards a stronger immune system.

Papaya leaf is also helpful in increasing the platelet count in the blood therefore is an excellent food both for prevention and for the treatment of dengue.

2.       Citrus foods

Citrus foods are rich in vitamin C which is an immunity booster. Vitamin C helps in the production of white blood cells which are the disease-fighting cells of the body. These foods are also loaded with antioxidants that protect the body from damage from free radicals. Some citrus foods include- lemons, papaya (fruit part), amla, muskmelon, grapes, Jamun (blackberry), baked capsicum, raw tomato in a salad, etc.

3.       Garlic

This common Indian kitchen herb is accepted as ‘wonder drug’ in Ayurveda over the centuries. Garlic’s immune-boosting properties come from its sulfur-containing compounds called allicin. Garlic is also considered as a natural antibacterial and anti-fungal food. Ginger is also very helpful in treating sore throat, inflammation, nausea, and other symptoms of dengue fever.

4.       Turmeric

Being an antiseptic and metabolism booster, turmeric acts as both preventives as a curative diet for dengue fever. During the current weather one can start taking turmeric milk in their daily diet to give themselves the maximum protection against dengue.

5.       Pomegranates

Pomegranates are packed with essential nutrients and antioxidants. In fact, pomegranate juice has three times as many antioxidants as other antioxidant-rich beverages, such as green tea. Plus the fruit is packed with essential nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Potassium, folate, etc  – making it a superfood to boost the immune system.

Pomegranate works as both preventive as well as curative diet for dengue fever. The fruit is high in iron, making it a great food for maintaining a normal blood platelet count. It also helps to reduce fatigue and tiredness that are caused due to viral infections.
